Quality Over Quantity: The Problems with Fast Fashion and Over-Consumption

Posted on April 25 2026

While We at Sandpipers love to talk about style, trends, and what’s new and exciting in the world of fashion swimwear, we are also consciously aware of what over-consumption is doing to the planet, our wallets, and the fashion industry as a whole.  Our philosophy is always quality over quantity and we aim to invest in pieces that will outlast just one season.

In an era dominated by ultra-fast and quick-changing trends also comes the rise of fast fashion brands like Shein, Temu, and Amazon to name a few. But these low-cost, low-quality brands come with a higher paying price than you would think.  Recent documentaries such as Netflix’s Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy (2024) pull back the curtain on just how deep that impact runs.  The film reveals how brands fuel a cycle of overproduction and overconsumption, producing far more clothing than we actually wear, much of which ends up in landfills within a year.  It also exposes how companies use manipulative marketing tactics and frictionless shopping tools to keep consumers buying without pause, creating a constant loop of desire and disposal.  Behind the scenes, this demand often drives labour exploitation and unsustainable production practices, while unsold inventory is frequently destroyed rather than reused.

The rise of “de-influencing” on TikTok is also reshaping the fashion landscape, ushering in a new era of mindful, intentional consumption.  Instead of encouraging endless hauls and must-have products, creators are now calling out overhyped items, sharing what’s not worth buying, and promoting a more curated, quality-over-quantity approach to style.  De-influencing has gained massive traction as a response to influencer fatigue and overconsumption, with many users prioritizing sustainability, value, and authenticity in their purchasing decisions.  This welcome shift is about building a timeless wardrobe by investing in pieces you truly love, wear often, and feel confident in, rather than chasing every single passing trend.

The takeaway here is clear: choosing fewer, better pieces and supporting brands rooted in ethics and sustainability isn’t just a fashion choice, it’s a powerful statement against a system designed to keep us consuming.

So what can we, as mindful consumers do?  We find creating a capsule vacation wardrobe built from high-end, well-made swimsuits and resort wear that will last multiple beach, resort, and cruise vacations is a great start to avoiding having to re-purchase new swimwear for every trip.  One of our favourite money-saving hacks when wanting to add-on to our existing travel pieces is to check out what’s on sale at Sandpipers.  If you already own a black bikini, (it’s a must for those of us who love beach vacations!) there are so many options to mix and match different tops and bottoms and maximize the number of beach day outfits you can create!  We dropped into Sandpipers in Yorkville with one of our favourite black bikinis to see what we could find.  Check out our findings below!
